SAD NEWS . . . Your help is needed. A young New York forester and colleague, Jude Zicot, was tragically killed when a tree fell on him as he was performing TSI in the Catskills on November 29. Jude was a 1996 graduate of SUNY-ESF, and leaves behind his wife Jennifer and three young children. The needs of Jude’s family at this time are many and immediate. Contributions to the "Jude Zicot Fund" are being accepted by Sawyer Savings Bank. The checks should be made to out to "Cash--Zicot Fund" and should have “Jude Zicot Fund” in the memo. They should be mailed as follows:

Please do what you can to help Jude's family in this terribly tragic time.
The New England and the New York State Societies of American Foresters
released the final report Future Challenges for Foresters – Outcomes
and Actions (pdf; 73 kb) on July 30, 2007 for distribution to members and other
interested parties. The germ of the idea was proposed by member and
SAF Fellow, Mervin Stevens to the NESAF executive committee in
January, 2006. The committee encouraged Merv and assisted him in
preparing a grant proposal to the SAF Forester’s Fund. The proposal
was accepted, approved, and funded with $1,500. That amount was
equally matched with cash and in-kind services from NESAF, its
chapters and divisions, NYSAF, and our Council member Leo Laferriere.
The initial step was a 1-day facilitated retreat held on June 6th,
2006 in Littleton, MA with additional support from the New England
Forestry Foundation. Twenty members representing a diverse range of careers, age, and gender attended and focused on discussing four
objectives. The major outcome from the retreat was a DRAFT white paper titled “Future Challenges for Foresters”
which retreat attendees helped to further edit and embellish through
several versions. The final draft titled “Future Challenges for
Foresters – Retreat Outcomes” was released to respective state society
members on October 1, 2006. Between this release and the NESAF Winter
meeting in March 2007 several members, chapters, and divisions had
additional discussion and provided commentary on content and direction
for the report. Following the NESAF Winter Meeting, the white paper
transitioned from a bulleted list of challenges and action items into
a more focused and prioritized narrative. The final document is now
available and is ready for another transformation – How can local
units (chapters and divisions) begin thinking about the issues and
ideas, and start a process of applying some of the included proactive
action items?

Our mission as foresters is to be responsible stewards of the earth’s forests while meeting society’s vital needs. The challenge of our mission lies in keeping forest ecosystems healthy and intact while concurrently drawing on their resources. We will meet this challenge by carefully monitoring and managing the effects of natural and human forces on the forest. Our decisions will be guided by our professional knowledge, our compassion for all living things, our desire to improve citizens’ lives, and our respect and concern for the entire forest ecosystem. By advancing forestry science, education, technology and the practice of forestry, the New England Society of American Foresters will provide the leadership to achieve its mission.
The Society of American Foresters (SAF) is a national scientific and educational association representing the forestry profession in the United States. Founded in 1900 by Gifford Pinchot, it is the largest professional society for foresters in the world. The mission of the Society of American Foresters is to advance the science, education, technology, and practice of forestry; to enhance the competency of its members; to establish professional excellence; and, to use the knowledge, skills, and conservation ethic of the profession to ensure the continued health and use of forest ecosystems and the present and future availability of forest resources to benefit society. SAF is a nonprofit organization meeting the requirements of 501 (c) (3). SAF members include natural resource professionals in public and private settings, researchers, CEOs, administrators, educators, and students.
The New England Society of American Foresters (NESAF) is a multi-
state society within the national Society of American Foresters. NESAF
is composed of four divisions representing the six New England states
of Connecticut (CT), Maine (ME), Massachusetts (MA), New Hampshire
(NH), Rhode Island (RI), and Vermont (VT). The Divisions are Green
Mountain (VT), Granite State (NH), Maine (ME) and Yankee (RI, CT and
MA). The Eastern Canadian Provinces of New Brunswick, Newfoundland,
Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Quebec are not part of the
charter of the NESAF. However, members of the Society residing in
these Provinces can request membership in the New England Society of
American Foresters.
