In 2010, the New England and New York Student Chapter of the Society of American Foresters held their first successful student conclave in many years. This event promises to be an annual gathering of forestry students and professionals sharing a weekend in the fall to discuss the programs at their schools and learn about the current topics in forestry.
2010 NE/NY SAF Student Conclave: UMass Amherst
Forestry Source: "First Annual NESAF/NY Student Conclave a Success"
The first-ever New England/New York Student Conclave took place over a beautiful October weekend in 2010, bringing together 20 SAF student members from across the region. First conceived by the students at the NESAF Annual Meeting the prior spring, the conclave was aimed at bringing together student members from across the two state societies to grow through sharing about their chapters’ successes and failures.
The event was hosted by the University of Massachusetts Chapter, held in their home state. Over the weekend a variety of educational field trips included a tour of the Quabbin Reservoir, the Harvard Forest, and a silvicultural tour of the Pine Sands in Massachusetts. A tribute to the success of the event was the attendance of members from the University of Connecticut, the University of Maine, the University of Massachusetts, and Paul Smith’s College. Several professional members joined the group for the tours and fire-side chats, in part to lead the tours, and in part simply to encourage and converse with the students.
The weekend was filled with constant conversations on forestry, work in the woods, and how the students could better run their chapters. Better yet, it was all had amongst laughter, time to camp out in the woods and enjoy great campfires while students built lasting relationships both with each other and the Society of American Foresters.
